As we age, our bodily functions deteriorate; it is after all a human tendency. What also deteriorates is our sex drive. A man with age, experiences a fall in testosterone levels after 40 years of age and thus his desire for intercourse also diminishes. However, there are some cases wherein men still have the sex drive of their 20 year old self but cannot seem to get it up. Erectile dysfunction is a problem that persists in men over a certain age and can be treated with medications.
Testosterone: An Overview
Testosterone is the male sex hormone that is produced in the testicles. This hormone plays a major role in a man’s sex drive, if the level of testosterone decreases, so does the sex drive.
The main roles of testosterone are to produce sperm, build muscle, grow body hair and help in deepening the voice.
Low testosterone: An Overview
When a man turns 30, his testosterone level falls by 1 per cent each year which then results to erectile dysfunctions, low sex drive and low sperm count.
He may also experience the following due to low testosterone:
- Low concentration powers
- Hot flushes
- Weight gain
Men over 40 are known to suffer from erectile dysfunction. The cause however for this problem isn’t only low testosterone but diabetes and high blood pressure also play a role in this problem.
There are certain medications a doctor prescribes to patients with erectile dysfunctions and the most used one being Viagra.
After 40, sperm quality also decreases, which leads to decline in male fertility. So, as you age, the chances of conceiving and having a baby decrease.
Apart from that, there are several other pills a man can be prescribed by your doctor according to your condition. It is important to note that these drugs must only be taken under supervision of an expert as they can cause some side effects in certain individuals.
