Laparoscopy

What is laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery, also called keyhole surgery, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that has greatly revolutionised many areas of surgery, including cancer and endometriosis surgeries. During the procedure, a small laparoscopic device is used. The device is carefully inserted through a small incision, and the camera is used to show images on a monitor. For open surgery, a 6 to 12-inch incision is made, but in laparoscopic surgery, only 2 to 5 small incisions of ½ inches or less are made.

Reasons for conducting a laparoscopy

Generally, a doctor may suggest performing a laparoscopy to detect the cause of different symptoms such as swelling in the abdomen or pelvic region, or abdominal and pelvic pain. It is also performed to confirm the issues found in a previous test such as an X-ray. Some common issues that can be identified through laparoscopy are as follows:

·     Appendicitis

·     Endometriosis

·     Ectopic pregnancy

·     Pelvic inflammation

·     Ovarian cyst

If required, the surgeon may collect a small tissue sample for biopsy. Laparoscopy is also used to remove blockages, stones, cysts or fibroids.

Laparoscopy Procedure

Laparoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia. Before the surgery, the surgeon may conduct some imaging or blood tests. Next, the patient is taken to the operating room, and an intravenous line is inserted through the arm to apply anaesthesia. The surgeon makes a small incision near the pelvic bone or belly button and then inserts the laparoscope device. The pelvic cavity is inflated using a gas. The device transmits real-time images of organs on the video monitor. Based on the requirements, multiple incisions can be made. Once done, a surgical drain is used to move out fluids or gas. Finally, the surgeon covers the incision by stitching.

After The Procedure

After the surgery, patients may experience pain in their shoulders due to the presence of gas in the diaphragm. However, it wears off very soon. Besides, they may also develop the following symptoms for a few days:

·     Abdominal bloating

·     Sore throat (generally happens due to the use of a breathing tube)

·     Fatigue

·     Abdominal bloating

·     Back pain

·     Discomfort at the incision site

However, if one develops symptoms such as vomiting, fainting, severe pain or inability to empty the bladder, one should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Benefits of laparoscopy

The benefits of laparoscopy are highly significant compared with those of open surgery. Some of the major benefits of this procedure are as follows:

·     Faster recovery

·     Less blood loss as the process is less invasive

·     Lower risk of infection

·     The scars may not be visible a few months after surgery.

Recovery Time

The patient can go home on the same day as the laparoscopy surgery. In some cases, the patient may be advised to stay in the hospital for a few days for a specific procedure. Discomfort is resolved within 48 to 72 hours. The surgeon prescribes some pain medication. One can resume regular work after one to two weeks post-surgery. The patients should follow the instructions given by the doctor for a faster recovery.

Surgical methods have evolved with time and have improved the quality of life for patients, and laparoscopy is one of these procedures.
