Preconception Checklist for Men

When comes to having a baby, all the focus is on the mom-to-be, but the dads-to-be play a major role too! His sperm will determine whether you get pregnant in the first place and how healthy will it be.

There are certain things men should keep in mind and follow, before conception in order to successfully achieve a healthy pregnancy. These are –

1. Get a general health checkup

The first step for a man after deciding to have a baby should be to get his general health assessment done. This is important because the doctor can assess if there are any issues that need to be dealt with before he starts trying to conceive. Along with a general health checkup, you should also get a sperm test and an STI test. This will determine the quality and quantity of your sperm and if there are any STI’s. Early detection can help treat these problems and the man can go on to have a baby without any hindrance.

2. Keep your testicles cool

High pressure, heat, electromagnetic radiation – all of these can affect your sperm quantity. Therefore, you should avoid sitting in hot tubs and saunas for too long. Also, avoid wearing tight briefs and putting your phone in the pocket of your jeans.

3. Reach your goal weight

Before you try to conceive, you should check what your ideal weight should be and try to reach it, by exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy diet. Avoid eating processed foods. Include in your diet lots of fruits and vegetables along with protein and carbohydrates. Drink sufficient amount of water every day. Nutrients like zinc and vitamin E are essential for good quality of sperm, thus eat foods that contain these nutrients. Along with eating properly and exercising, sleeping well is also essential. Get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night, as it can improve low sperm count and quality.

4. Avoid smoking and alcohol

Tobacco, alcohol and drugs can all affect the quality and quantity of the sperm as well as your overall health. Thus it is best to quit these habits before you try to conceive. You can consult your doctor to come up with an action plan.

5. Reduce stress

Hectic work schedule and other lifestyle factors can increase stress levels. Thus it is important to keep it under control before you try to conceive. This can be done by practising relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga and breathing exercises.

6. Prepare yourself mentally for becoming a father

The idea of having a baby is exciting as well as scary. You should share your feelings with your partner and discuss about your fears, insecurities. You should also talk about financial and other aspects pertaining to the baby. This would make you feel prepared for the baby’s arrival.

It may seem like there are a lot of things to do and a lot of things to avoid as well. Follow this preconception checklist and remember, you are doing your part for conceiving successfully and having a healthy baby.
