Things You Need to Know About ICSI

April 5, 2017

There are times when a couple tries for conception for quite some time, but do not see results. Despite this, they do not see the need to go visit a doctor to check if they need to take infertility treatment. In actuality, it is high time they go to a fertility clinic specialist.

Firstly, a few initial tests are done on both partners and then based on the results, the necessary infertility treatment steps are recommended.

When we talk about infertility treatments, the most common one which comes to our mind is IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). Just like how IVF treatment is for females, on similar lines ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is for males.

In ICSI, a single sperm is directly placed into each egg by piercing the outer covering of the egg. Also, an ICSI infertility treatment improves the success rate of IVF treatment.

When Does the Doctor Recommend ICSI?

During natural conception, the hardest sperm manages to break through the membrane of an egg to fertilize it. Weaker sperms don’t make it.

Following male infertility factors lead to ICSI treatment:

  • Low sperm count
  • Poor sperm motility
  • Decreased ability of sperm to penetrate into the egg
  • Previous unsuccessful IVF procedure

Risks Associated with ICSI

Though an ICSI infertility treatment gives you a chance to experience the joy of parenthood, there are some risks which come along with it.

Firstly, there are chances of rare genetic problems carried by the sperm being passed on to the child.

There are also increased chances of being pregnant with multiples, which can lead to the following complications during pregnancy & childbirth:

  • Gestational diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Low amniotic fluid levels
  • Cesarean section or premature labour.

It is best to discuss ICSI benefits and risks with your doctor as it may vary from person to person. The doctor’s advice comes from the study of your personal fertility history.

Steps you can take to retain Fertility

There are some steps that you should be following regularly in your life, young or old, which help in natural conception:

  • Exercising regularly
  • Having a healthy diet
  • Watching your weight
