In Vitro Fertilization

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) involves the use of assisted reproductive technology to help couples who have trouble conceiving (usually due to infertility). The procedure consists of fertilizing an egg outside the body in a laboratory and implanting the fertilized egg (embryo) back into the uterus. IVF is a complex process that requires a team of specialists, including fertility doctors, embryologists, and nurses.

Doctors will recommend IVF if one has been unsuccessful in trying to conceive for at least a year. IVF may also be recommended if you or your partner have been diagnosed with certain medical conditions like blocked fallopian tubes or low sperm count.

How does IVF work?

IVF process starts with ovary stimulation using medications, followed by egg retrieval using transvaginal ultrasound. The eggs are then fertilized with sperm and grown in the lab for 3-5 days to form embryos. The best embryos are selected for transfer to the uterus.

The medical team performs the embryo transfer, typically 3–5 days after the egg retrieval. They insert the embryos into the uterus using a small catheter under sedation or light anaesthesia. After the transfer, the patient is advised to avoid strenuous activity for a few days and also to take medications like progesterone to support the pregnancy.

What are the chances of success in IVF?

IVF is a highly successful treatment option for couples struggling with infertility, with a success rate of around 40% per cycle. However, success rates can vary depending on several factors, including age, the underlying cause of infertility, and the quality of the embryos. IVF does not guarantee pregnancy, and the individual may need to undergo more than one cycle to get pregnant.

When does one need to see a doctor?

If somebody faces difficulty conceiving or is suffering from any of the conditions mentioned above, they should not hesitate to consult a doctor for a timely diagnosis.

1. How long does the IVF process take?

The IVF process can take several weeks, depending on the individual case. The stimulation of the ovaries typically takes 2–3 weeks, followed by egg retrieval and fertilization. The embryos are then allowed to grow and divide in the laboratory for 3–5 days, and the embryo transfer is typically performed 3–5 days after the egg retrieval. After the transfer, the patient will need to wait about two weeks to determine if the procedure was successful.

2. Are there any risks associated with IVF?

IVF is considered a safe procedure, but as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks like Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), congenital disabilities, and ectopic pregnancies.

3. What is the success rate of IVF?

Success rates can vary depending on your age and the cause of infertility and also depends on the clinic and the medical team's experience. At Apollo Fertility, our experienced medical professionals will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that considers your unique situation and needs. We understand the emotional and financial toll infertility can cause and are committed to providing you with the best care and support throughout your journey.

4. How much does IVF cost?

The number of cycles required, the use of donor eggs or sperm, and any additional procedures, such as genetic testing, can affect the cost of IVF. On average, it can range from ₹1,00,000 to ₹3,50,000 in India. You should check with your insurance provider to see if the insurance plan covers IVF.

5. How does age matter in IVF treatment?

Success rates decrease as women get older. Women over 35 may have a lower chance of success with IVF. You should consult with a doctor to determine the best course of treatment.
