Does the chosen sex position affect fertility?

March 17, 2018

Trying to have a baby is stressful enough and you may often find yourself wondering if youre doing the sex part right. You must have thought many times if there are some special positions that will enhance your chances of conceiving. Lets see if there is any truth to that.

Supportive sex positions- Really?

In reality, there is no research to back up these notions that one position is better than the other. According to doctors, there are some positions that may help your efforts. Some experts used scanning to see what happens inside when the deed is being performed. The scanning was done on two positions – missionary and doggy style (the position where the female partner is bent on all fours and the male partner penetrates from behind).

It was found that these two positions allow deep penetration where the tip of the penis reached the areas between vaginal walls and the cervix (the opening of the womb), as confirmed by the scans. In the missionary position, the penis reaches to the in front of the cervix and in the doggy position, it reaches the back of the cervix. The ultimate goal is to deposit sperms close to the cervix to facilitate the movement of sperms.

Other positions like woman on top or standing up may be equally good in getting the sperms close to the cervix. Most sperms are strong swimmers and ultimately, the goal is to deposit the sperms close to the cervix for better chances of conception.

The right time to do it- It matters

The only key factor that matters for most couples is to have intercourse during the period of ovulation. Couples trying to conceive should make sure that they have sex two to three days prior to ovulation and after that as well. Ovulation is when the egg is released from the ovary. It occurs once in every menstrual cycle, for example, for a 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs 14 days prior to your next period. Since eggs can survive for only 12-48 hours, doctors advice couples to have sex two-three days prior to ovulation and during ovulation as well, since the chances of conceiving are the highest during these days.

Lets do it how many times?

Most couples believe that they should be saving up sperms until the female partner is ovulating. This is completely wrong. If you wait till youre ovulating and you miscalculate your ovulation day, you could miss your most fertile window. To make the most of the fertile period, having sex every other day is the best way to maximize your chances of conceiving.
