Why Does IVF Fail?

Even with assisted fertility treatments, the path towards parenthood is not quick and easy. Along with preparing for undergoing cycles of various treatments, it is also necessary to prepare for the possibilities of not achieving results, especially in the first attempts.

IVF, or in vitro fertilisation, is one of the less invasive, simpler procedures and is often recommended in most cases of mild infertility issues. Even then, IVF can fail. While for some it may take more than one cycle to achieve success, for others it could be an unsuitable mode of treatment.

6 Reasons Why IVF Fails

By understanding why IVF procedures may fail for some, one may be able to better gauge whether it is the best option for them or not.

Common Reasons Why IVF Fails.

  • Implantation Failure

Implantation is the part where the embryo attaches itself inside the uterus. Its failure to do so would result in a failed IVF cycle. The reasons why this may happen are not uniform. It could be due to the health of the uterus, the health of the embryo, or a combination of several other reasons.

  • Unhealthy Sperm

While tests are conducted to assess the reproductive health of the participants, it is possible that sperm with lower motility or poor health may not perform the job. In some cases, ICSI is recommended to bypass the unhealthy sperm and increase the chances of fertilisation. However, unhealthy sperm may result in failure in some cases, especially with regular insemination.

  • Age

Age, especially in females, plays an important role in determining fertility and reproductive health. Even with fertility treatments, chances of pregnancy in women over 35 years of age start to reduce. This is usually related to decreased quantity and quality of eggs.

  • Ovarian Function

IVF requires the retrieval of multiple eggs from the participating female. To enable this, hormones and drugs are administered to enhance ovarian function and produce more eggs in a single cycle than usual. For various reasons, ovaries may fail to produce the number of eggs necessary for the procedure. This results in a failure to proceed with the treatment.

  • Chromosomal Irregularities

Abnormalities in chromosomes may cause the IVF process to fail. This refers to extra or missing DNA. Such irregularities can be passed on by either parent. If you are aware of genetic irregularities, it is better to consult your doctor beforehand and ask for options.

  • Lifestyle

Preparing for pregnancy, assisted or natural, requires a transition to a healthier lifestyle if you weren’t already living one. A healthy diet, some physical activity, abstinence from alcohol and smoking, and mental wellbeing are advisable. While reproductive health matters the most, other aspects of your health cannot be ignored.

No fertility treatment has achieved 100% results. But remember that what has worked for someone else may not be what works best for you. Do not be discouraged by IVF failure, especially the first cycle.
